ルート証明機関、下位証明機関をセットアップし、Debian Squeezeのnginx 0.7.67が受け入れるこのCAのいずれかによって署名されたクライアント証明書を生成しようとしています。私の問題は、ルートCA署名付きクライアント証明書が正常に機能するのに対し、下位CAが1つ署名すると「400 Bad Request。SSL certificate error」が発生することです。

?で指定されたファイルに中間CA証明書を追加してみてください。代わりに、ssl_client_certificate
に指定したファイルの末尾に追加されているようです。
これの代わりに:

# cat ../subCA/certs/subca.crt >> /etc/nginx/ssl/client.pem
これを試して:
# cat certs/rootca.crt > /etc/nginx/ssl/client.pem
# cat ../subCA/certs/subca.crt >> /etc/nginx/ssl/server.crt
@Maxim Douninが述べたように、ssl_verify_depth 2;トリックを行う必要があります。これは、デフォルトではssl_verify_depth == 1であり、nginxはdepth == 2(ルート+中間)で証明書を検証できないためです。
